About The Artwork

This work is highly conceptual in nature, while there were specific process exploration objectives also informing the work. From a process and stylization perspective, the production was done according to the following guidelines: 1. Make use metallic paints (gold was used for the vertical column of circles in the center, while silver was used for the border of the rectangular vertical and horizontal columns). 2. Contrast warm foreground colors (brown and gold) against cool background colors (blue). 3. Employ the use of a sandpapering technique to sand down a glaze layer in order to reveal ridges of a textured layer beneath (used for the main background as well as for the calligraphic glyphs on the insides of the vertical and horizontal rectangular columns). 4. Make use of masking tape and other masking techniques to achieve precise lines and borders (used with the silver borders of the vertical and horizontal rectangular columns). 5. Use "loading" of paint onto edges of shapes and widgets for dabbing shapes (used for the vertical column of circles in the center). 6. Use shadow glazes in the corners to achieve a vignette effect and draw attention to the central content in the work. In terms of the conceptual aspect of the work, the composition is designed to represent the number three, with a specific focus on irony. Specifically, in some respects this representation of "three" immediately resembles more closely the Roman numeral II (the number 2), at least with respect to the arrangement of the vertical and horizontal rectangular columns. The irony is introduced by replacing the expected central column with, instead, a vertical row of circles. But, specifically three circles. Furthermore, within each circle is an arrangement containing two gold columns surrounding a series of gold dots. So, once again, each of the three circles mirrors the macro features of the arrangement, which introduces an element of recursiveness to the design. Finally, to introduce some additional intrigue and to stimulate rumination by the viewer, each of the circles is incrementally turned by 45 degrees, such that the top circle arrangement resembles a forward slash, the center circle arrangement resembles a hyphen or dash, and the bottom circle arrangement resembles a backwards slash. Each of the circles is further embellished with a halo and a highlight stroke, produced by sandpapering down to the lower coat of paint. Also, cryptic calligraphic notation or glyphs are embedded into the vertical and horizontal rectangular columns, and this calligraphy is glazed over and sanded down to produce a distressed, eroded, or weathered appearance. And, to enhance the three dimensional effect of the impasto surface profile, shadowing is painted against the calligraphy and within the borders of the columns.
