About The Artwork
A total and utter fantasy, Meg Lionel Murphy's work portrays a real moment after trauma, when victims gather enough strength to grow through, if not beyond the horror of their pasts. Meg imagines the womxn featured in her work can’t fully escape what happened to them, but they’ve reckoned with it—at least enough to build a new future. A victim of extreme violence herself, Murphy’s construction of this show is an act of radical growth. Despite battling debilitating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, all the paintings created for the show were made while she received Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD—an underutilized, evidence-based treatment most commonly practiced with combat veterans. It is in that context, that Murphy asks for her work to be viewed in the tradition of war paintings.

Artist Meg Lionel Murphy’s paintings are informed by debilitating PTSD from severe domestic violence. Over the past few years, she has compulsively painted heartbroken femmes that magically grow larger, stronger, and scarier than the world around them. As the paintings grow in number, she grows just a little larger, stronger, and scarier too. Meg works from rural Wisconsin. She splits her time painting between a little blue shack in a junkyard and the storefront artist collective, The Yellow Room.
