About The Artwork

For many years I have painted the scenery of my local area. Nearly all picturesque landscapes of Dartmoor and surrounding area. This last few years I’ve tried to capture the emotional side of the moor and this has redirected my painting towards abstraction. Shape, colour and form is simplified to reflect the interaction of natural and, increasingly, manmade forces on this land. The immense forces of earthquake and volcanic action over millions of years have formed the iconic strata of granite rocks. This shattering, movement and repeated metamorphosis evokes an emotion of scale, instability and our smallness in relation to those hidden forces around us – as we float, serenely on, upon our rocky islands above a molten sea. I use a variety of techniques to achieve the effect I’m after. Each painting starts as a separate full sized work usually painted in oils. The inspiration and subject is usually a stylised aerial view of a landscape depicting mapping contour lines and geological structures. This is then digitally copied for manipulation on photo software. The image is sliced and rearranged in a semi-random way and colour modified to reflect the subject and harmony of the overall image. A print of this image becomes the master sketch for the final work. This is painted in acrylics fortified with texture paste, on canvas.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

To me painting is a therapy. I paint for myself. I choose subjects which fascinate and inspire me. Being creative is both problem solving and emotional experience that I can express within my artworks. Experimenting with methods and techniques to reflect and magnify the memory of those emotions. I'm inspired by the natural environment and my local landscape. I find I can produce abstract images to go someway towards my goals, as well as painting more figurative works that others may experience their own emotional responses. I like developing style, method and technique to express my feelings towards a subject and in such a way that creates a unique piece of art.
