I find this painting melancholy & austere, but also serene & romantic... It has to do with the restlessness & anxiety of modern daily life—the constant urge to do something or say something—& about the body/gender. I'm interested in the way the body, full of hormones & habits, shapes the way life is experienced (i.e. I think that women tend to have even more versions of themselves & are more in touch with the fluidity of the self, due to the ebb & flow of hormonal cycles & the impacts of the male gaze). Birds symbolize flight, freedom; this one hovers & watches, removed from the scene like an omnipotent observer. The red shape could symbolize an active male gaze or, more abstractly, some sort of masculine edge. The lillies (on raw canvas) point to duality & balance. The brightly-colored, impasto rendering of female figures was inspired by an Ernst Kirchner image of a brothel. In the spotlight of art history there are so many paintings of naked women & sex workers, but not many painted by them. The title references The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock, a T.S. Eliot poem I, like many others, absolutely love. It is an internal monologue of an urban man mulling over feelings of isolation, regret, embarrassment, emasculation, sexual frustration, & fear of mortality. So this piece is about these different spectrums, in art & in the body, overlapping & constantly shifting. It’s about people’s selves coming & going, playing the different roles that contemporary society demands, especially in terms of women managing their subjecthood & objecthood.

www.hazelthepainter.com /// @hazelthepainter /// Hazel Miller’s paintings feature lush botanical life, statuesque figures, and wild animals and insects. Her work demonstrates an interest in the overlapping fields of natural history and art history. Themes of her work range from impermanence and spirituality to metaphysics and deep time. Miller's paintings are characterized by imaginative color palettes and a close attention to brushstroke textures. Her most prominent stylistic inspirations include Modernist experiments in semi-abstraction and sumi-e painting methods and philosophy. Originally from San Antonio, TX (b. 1993), Miller now calls Spokane, WA her home. She graduated from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2016 (Rose City Scholarship) and is a recipient of an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant (2018). Miller had her first solo show, “The Black Universe” in 2021 at Terrain Gallery in Spokane, WA. NOTE: Most large paintings are shipped rolled in a tube, but many can be stretched and shipped in a box or crate upon request. Please inquire about specific piece for more info.
