To be able to understand the second meaning, it is not enough to just spend some time looking at the canvas, you need to make yourself reflect upon it. "The Seagull" is a classic interpretation of the nude genre. A naked female body has been in art for many centuries symbolizing purity and innocence, or vice versa — sin and temptation, and also fertility and hedonism, and even revolutionary struggle. What signs and symbols does “The Seagull” hold? The title of the work certainly has an explicit reference to the famous play by A.P. Chekhov where the bird is a symbol of needless suffering and love, loss and numb human soul, empty talks and idle curiosity. The woman in the picture is beautiful, her young and athletic body is turned away but we can feel her urge. Her face is open to the wind and light, and the wind is ruffling her hair. At the same time her posture reveals her drama: her arm bent at the elbow is like a broken wing and her thrown back head is a cry for help. What will happen to the seagull in its flight? Naked body, naked soul. In the world of the past or present we can’t hope for anything good. The seagull is ready to face the attack even if it means losing its life. It is ready to die flying away freely and beautifully. «The Seagull" is one of the works in the series created by Syuzanna Kamara.
