About The Artwork
This was my first attempt to paint figures without masks, without them becoming ‘portraits’ which might restrict the possibility of identification with the situation and, at the same time to dial back the explicit nature of some of these images. I was hoping that by using my ‘friends’ (the oriental carpets, floral still life elements and textiles of dubious historical provenance) that I recreate the atmosphere of the masked paintings without covering the faces changing the mood.
