About The Artwork

Painting at the open air, capturing the experience of nature trough the use of light and color. Luís Kerch: Dreamed Landscapes By Margaret Failoni Although he prefers 'plein air' painting, Luis Kerch's landscapes are not so much what he sees, but rather what he dreams, what he wants landscapes to be: pale, flowing, romantic images of once-upon-a-time. He purposely chooses a pale palette, thinly applied to the picture plane. Everything appears to be translucent, like in a dream, seen through a warm mist. In present day society, it is rare and rather welcoming to see such a romantic imagery of mostly European landscapes although they could be from anywhere. The work seems to be painted in Spring and summer, devoid of chaos, of noise, of any disturbing elements. The compositional variations are few and in between. Many paintings were realized in England, in the magnificent countryside just south of Kent. But having traveled widely, especially throughout Europe, the artist has never been short of inspiring places to incite his need to paint. We are always presented with gardens, some manicured, most autonomous growths swaying in the wind, totally devoid of a present world vulgarity, but rather stubbornly insistent on a calm, spiritual beauty rare in its uniqueness. This work which is the opposite of what is seen and admired in todays contemporary art world, becomes all the more precious for the artist's will to go against the grain, and to paint for the sake of beauty alone. His brave attempt has paid off as he is widely collected in Europe with many works in private collections and museums. In England he has been awarded the prestigious Three Needle Prize for Painting and Sculpture. Born in Mexico, Luís Kerch graduated from The University of Miami to then go on to receive a Master's Degree from the Pratt Institute in New York City. While continuing to travel, he lives and keeps a studio in Madrid.

Kerch is a plenairist painter. He organizes his canvases as reverberations that activate our imagination, giving light to the landscapes they seem to form. Luis Kerch (1962) was born in Mexico and currently lives in Tenerife. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Miami, Florida. He studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, obtaining, in 1990, a Master of Science in Communication Design. Kerch is a plenairist painter. He organizes his canvases as reverberations that activate our imagination, giving light to the landscapes they seem to form. His images are shifting, oscillations of light and colour originated by translucent stains. His motifs seem not to dissolve completely, to remain in a state of perpetual dissolution. As in Turner, in his work the intensity merges with the instant. Luis Kerch has exhibited in the USA, Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, UK and Portugal.
