About The Artwork
Oil on canvas, framed in a black wooden floater framer, ready to hang. Part of the Alchemy to Chemistry series this work is painted using synthetic indigo which was developed by analysing the colour making chemicals in natural indigo in the industrial revolution, and then synthesising them. Indigo had been a slave trade/indentured labour product up until this point. The German synthesis of indigo made it possible to produce this colour without slavery. These pigments trace our history as creators of beauty, of visual culture and of our interconnectedness across geography and time. It is beautifully framed in a bespoke black floater frame. One of a series of five called synthesis, this piece can stand alone, or be in a pair or trio with others from the same series.
