“This piece is an exploration of the physical qualities of spray paint (oil) how it is applied, it’s opacity and transparency, as well as the way the colors mix and separate. The imagery comes from not only the above qualities of the paint as well as the action of applying it to the surface but I believe, directly from my subconscious. I am interested in Jung’s archetypes of the collective unconscious and their symbolic mythologies. Visually the imagery relates to graffiti as well as abstract expressionism. This work has a direct correlation to my time spent in the 80s & 90s in NYC with the Rivington School movement and the Williamsburg Immersionists (where I was in both a pivotal figure); it is emblematic of the environmental upheaval and cultural coalescence of the era. In this piece, as always in my paintings I explore the idea of plasticity, the illusion of a 3 dimensional space on a 2 dimensional surface. Also with abstract imagery I am interested in what each viewer uniquely brings to the piece, and how the work speaks to them individually.”

Painter, sculptor and musician, Michael J. Zwicky was a pivotal figure on the Lower East Side of New York City in the 80’s & 90’s. He and his groups "Demo Moe" & "Scrap Metal Music" have been reviewed in the Village Voice, NYPress & Spin Magazine. Michael's work is portrayed in two recently published books: “The Rivington School: 80s New York Underground”(2021) & “The Williamsburg Avant-Garde: Experimental Music and Sound on the Brooklyn Waterfront”(2023). His recently commissioned work, the sculptural installation, "Drilt!" (2021), remains on permanent exhibition at the International Fusion Museum in Easton, PA. “My work is influenced by Graffiti, Surrealism & Expressionism, Jungian archetypes & their symbolic mythologies. I create this abstract imagery, the unforeseeable result of which speaks to each viewer with what they uniquely bring to the work.”
