The concept for this series was born when my brother was having a life threatening surgery. I was so nervous and scared and needed to calm down.

“What transpired was the product of self-therapy. Owen grabbed a palette knife and applied a dab of acrylic paint and modeling paste to the canvas, and then another and another, building a mesmerizing grid of varying colors.”

It was theraputic. My brother made it through the surgery and I discovered a new way to use a medium. The name came from a Niel Young song and the frosting like texture of the paint.

About The Artwork

The concept for this series was born when my brother was having a life threatening surgery. I was so nervous and scared and needed to calm down.“What transpired was the product of self-therapy. Owen grabbed a palette knife and applied a dab of acrylic paint and modeling paste to the canvas, and then another and another, building a mesmerizing grid of varying colors.”— George Lang, Oklahoma Gazette. It was theraputic. My brother made it through the surgery and I discovered a new way to use a medium. The name came from a Niel Young song and the frosting like texture of the paint. This painting, “White Sand” diptych was inspired by the array of neutral colors found on the tiny pebbles of the beach. The beach gets us feeling all Zen. It is so peaceful and relaxing. The repetitive eb and flow of waves crashing on the shore de-stimulates our active minds and helps us to slow down, breathe deeply and feel more engaged. The physical sensation of putting our feet in warm sand makes us feel connected to the earth and feel human. I want this painting to stimulate your senses. Hopefully, triggering memories on how your body feels warm from the rays of the sun and what it feels like to have your feet in the sand, breathe deep and recall the smell of ocean air. This painting is very sculptural and versatile in that it has many different installation configurations. It provides a visual vacation where each dot of color captures the light and casts subtle shadows providing an ever changing view. Longevity and quality are extremely important to me so I have my custom baltic birch panels built and shipped to my studio in Oklahoma. The backside of each panel is extensively braced to support the weight of the paint and prevent warping. This panel has a 2.5” raw wood edge so there is no need to frame.
