Cole completed and exhibited a series of 35 expressive Landscape paintings in 2017based on plein air paintings from Hill End, Mintaro and Pental Island in Australian regional towns. This work was part of the "Snakes" collection of works, from the Hill End Studies, yet branching off into more abstraction of the forms and non representational colour with this piece. A longtime appreciator of Australian painters Fred Williams and Brett Whitely, Cole is recently inspired by next generation Australian Artists Alan Jones and Luke Scribberas. Joanna uses a liberal approach to colour, texture and application in this collection as in previous collections. The title of "Snakes Alive." is a combination of the words of a Les Murray poem, and the Confectionary of the same name. The suggestion is a playful response to the original study, and the artist hopes to share the joy of colour, with the drama of the Australian outback.
