Sleeping Breath Painting

This painting is about the rising and falling brushstroke, each mark an exhaling breath exhausting the paint on the brush as a sustained note, starting as a shout and ending as a whisper, or as undertones ending in a fanfare-finale, from square to oblique beginnings and endings. In making preliminary sketches, multiple trial brush-stokes took on the semblance of a rib-cage torso carrying lungs and breath. We have 12 pairs of ribs (pairs 1 to 7 are true ribs, 8-12 false, of which 11 & 12 are floating), and as the painting developed I became ambivalent as to whether the brush strokes represented the ribs, or the breath the ribs contain within their protection, deciding that neither this nor the precise number of ribs here was of literal importance.
