This piece is only available through my website www.gabrielagil.com/siamese. Payment plans still available. I worked on this piece after a tremendously impactful trip to Honduras, where I discovered Chachahuate, a Garifuna community of about 100 people living in an island, and surviving off of fish and tourism. The Afro-indigenous population lives precariously and lack some of the most basic needs such as clean water and electricity. However, it truly touched me to see how kind-hearted, generous, and genuinely happy they are despite all of this. This was the experience that drove me to commit to investing at least 10% of my art income to help underdeveloped and marginalized communities. In 2017 and 2018, my philanthropic efforts were primarily focused on supporting the children of the community (which make up half of the population) to go to school by providing uniforms, shoes, supplies, mobile phones, food, and anti-parasite treatments. My plan is to invest 100% of the net proceeds of this piece to help them further, particularly with clean water and more community bathrooms. I currently donate 10% of the proceeds of my work to social impact, but I am donating 100% of this one because they were very present on my mind while making the piece, and because had I not met them, I might not have realized how much responsibility I have in helping those with less fortunate circumstances. The painting includes hanging hardware, and is hand-signed on the back. It is a unique piece - no prints are available. About the Siamese series: Three years in the making, the Siamese series was inspired by the strong, yet flowing nature of Siamese fighting fish. I created this body of work with the goal of making it the transition from a full-time job working with technology startups in Silicon Valley to one where art, my calling, would take the center stage. Therefore, the whole series evolved in parallel to the mental and emotional journey of pursuing a goal regardless of obstacles and difficulty. The colorful brushstrokes are meant to convey the vivacious and flowing nature of Siamese fighting fish; and, the meticulous metal patchwork is meant to resemble thousands of scales, but most importantly, the armor and strength of a warrior.

United States
I was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras in 1989 but spent my entire life moving throughout Latin America and the United States. As such, the process of navigating assimilation in changing environments has remained a constant in my life and is at the root of my research. I began my creative explorations at the age of five though ballet and modern dance; however, over the past nine years I have primarily focused on painting. Through my grand, vibrant, and layered paintings I explore my personal narrative as it relates to immigration, self-identity, and the human experience of moving through space and time. I currently live and work in New York City.
