About The Artwork

This is one of the paintings I have been making during lockdown, in which I have been experimenting with making my own angled edge stretchers. Like much of my work, the original inspiration for this painting was drawn from my environment. Shapes and forms derived from my local landscape were marked in before being worked over, cut into and nearly obliterated by mark-making on top. The result is a vivid, textured experiment with the formal conventions of painting, in which the traditional structure of the rectangular canvas form is collapsed by my use of angled wood, and by my inclusion of part of the stretcher bar within the painting by slicing away a section of canvas.

I use abstraction to interpret landscapes and environments, often using a range of mediums to produce dynamic, layered paintings which hold within them a sense of rhythm and flow. I am inspired by art’s potential to express ideas, atmosphere and emotion. I am interested in creating compositional balance by exploring contrasts of colour, form and texture, and enjoy developing and exploring new techniques and materials in my work. Please see my website www.rosalindsanderson.com for more information on my work. Awards: Awarded VACMA Emerging Artist Bursary, 2020. Selected Saatchi Art Rising Star, 2019.
