About The Artwork

This work was commissioned as part of an exhibition at Oldham Gallery. The exhibition centred around the display of Degas Hélène Rouart in Her Father's Study (1886). The exhibition named 'Women in Art' briught into question the roles that women play art both as the sitter and the creator. Louise's abstract paintings incorporate fabric and stitch to make up the canvas, creating an unfamiliar surface, that draws the viewer in to readdress perspective. Using both found imagery and personal archive, Louise brings the feminine form into ‘She’s A lot’ alongside a portrait of a woman, repositioning them in abstraction, she invites us to question gaze. Process becomes a large part of her work, creating a non-traditional form of canvas from fabrics and embroidery. Once the painting has been stretched the embroidery continues to inhabit the space of the abstract painting and enhances the bright pigmented palette.

Louise graduated in 2019 from the University of Edinburgh after 4 years of specialising in painting. Now based at a art studio in Manchester her work mainly encompasses bright colours and fabrics. Alongside her printmaking, she creates work through collage, combining paint and textiles. She enjoys bringing attention to the wooden stretcher through the use of fabric as a canvas, allowing her paintings to embed different dimensions. She wants the strong pigmented colours in her work to create aesthetic compositions, paying close attention to how each work sits alongside the next. The bold colours used in her materials and paint aim to create paintings that unite the imaginary and the celebratory.
