About The Artwork
My intention with this series, "Zen Still Life" is to create a large-scale image with a limited number of natural objects in a serene composition. The color palette is also intentionally limited to natural shades. I used the old-master technique of a solid undercoat built up with layers of purple, orange and umber, leaving a pool of light in the center to illuminate the subject. I hope the viewer will enjoy a feeling of timelessness and calm along with the contemplation of natural and simple subject matter.

I was born and brought up in Boston, Massachusetts. I can't remember a time when I didn't have a pencil in my hand and a pad of paper to draw on. I've never imagined being anything but an artist, although there was a time after graduating college that i had to wait for my ideas to come of age. Although I'm a native of the East Coast, after working in Santa Barbara since 1976 and the California light, colors, and aesthetic has been the strongest influence on my work. I categorize my paintings as Contemporary California Realism.
