I made this painting as part of The Contemporary Indigenous Collection, where I interviewed people I met on my travels around South America to uncover it's true face; its influences and global diversity. I asked them if the native indigenous culture was present in their lives and how. Pablo Alejandro Bary French Heritage Mum: Argentinian Dad: Argentinian Grandfather: French Born in Buenos Aires, lived 30 years in Argentina, 3 years in Brazil and 1 in Chile. “Ok, my heritage is french but I am south american and I feel in my bones. I have been studying the origins of my native culture (mapuche) in southamerica. Im not mapuche or nothing in my blood is mapuche or aborigine. But, the continent i’m born, is full of the energy and history of aborigine people. So, the connection I have with them is the land, the earth, the lakes, the sea, the mountains. And finally, the respect of that culture is the strongest connection. Because in the land I born, the invasion was horrible. And is because their sacrifice I am born and I am south american.” The Mapuche are a group of indigenous inhabitants of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina, including parts of present-day Patagonia. Today the collective group makes up over 80% of the indigenous peoples in Chile, and about 9% of the total Chilean population.
