About The Artwork
I experiment with speed and seek imperfection, intending to defy composition and structure. Chaos. They’re either paired back or over painted, cut apart and re-sewn and re-painted. I use a hell of a lot of paint to not have much paint left on the canvas. I kick dirt all over it, rub it in, add rust, scrunch up the canvas and do whatever’s necessary to create marks that I would never be able to make consciously.

Ryan McGennisken’s paintings are constructed through an experimental studio process that intends to defy considered composition and gesture. By layering paint, motor oil, dirt, and rust with speed, he favours imperfection and seeks unforeseen beauty; adding and deleting marks at every step of the process. Seemingly inconsequential marks can have an influence on his decisions. Colour is employed sparingly, quickly and autonomously. The results often resemble the decaying, rotting, weather-beaten and defaced facades of abandoned buildings and objects.
