About The Artwork

I live near a river that in early spring becomes iridescent blue as snow melts and mineral springs bring a living essence into its sometimes-swift current. I thought I must be dreaming when I observed this but someone else remarked on this phenomenon as well. Sometime back I crossed this river every day on a low concrete bridge barely above water line and often covered by spring floods. Driving across the water in this way had a dimension all its own and I often saw small boats there or people fishing or a photographer capturing the beauty of its vivid colors and atmospheric mists. My sketchbooks from that time have record of the color of these moments, usually at sunrise when color appeared in dynamic contrasts and then vanished as the brightness of day became apparent. In River Boats I think I spent a great amount of time aligning the space and color to in some way explain these experiences and find a way to synthesize its dreamy effect on how I looked and thought about it. Watercolor holds a special place in art media, transparent, fragile, expressive and above all, fluid, allowing for a varied approach and a certain freedom while brushing water into paper and beginning by allowing pigment to flow into pools of water on the surface. It is a highly romantic medium, stellar for natural subjects and this is the allure of why I love to paint in watercolor.

The landscape places I study have a familiar but refreshing way as light changes form -- often highlighting subtleties of contour. Ever changing, atmospheric and dream-like, the land reflects a deep harmony and it is this poetry that is the subject in my paintings.
