Rainy Day Painting

This is one in the series of twelve paintings I painted during the two years of the pandemic. Even though we all spent much more time at home, my work life continued as usual - many hours in the studio as many days as possible each week. What did change, however, was my focus and the subject matter. Limited to my home surroundings, I welcomed the chance to paint the every day beauty of ordinary things that surround us. I paid special attention to the objects collected over a lifetime of friendships and travels. I treasure these objects for their character and beauty, for the memories they hold. The antique tablecloth in this painting comes from our house in Istria, just across the bay from Venice - its unique print and texture always remind me of the rainy days we spent as children at our summer house - playing gin rummy and toothpick poker or pick ups sticks on this cloth. I chose oil on canvas in order to achieve bold, rich layers of color and the most direct contact with the viewer possible.
