Purl Painting

This is one of a series of rectangular paintings I have done to start off the new year after working almost exclusively in the square format. In this painting I was inspired by purling waters in a stream. I made mono-prints on painted perm papers to create the impression of waters whirling. The colors are primarily dark grays and blues, but the blue is sometimes electric and the grays are juxtaposed to bright red stripes, so there is nothing somber about this piece. The viewer will hopefully find it calming in spite of the brushwork activity because of the repetitive patterns. Hopefully there is an auditory quality to it as well...the sound of gently swirling water.
