MALA HORA (the witching hour) is the studio name for my visual artwork: I am Gabi, a queer, nonbinary Xicanx multidisciplinary artist. My favorite creative realms to explore are painting, illustration, hand painted objects, and surrealist imagery. Staying true to my namesake, my work explores memory, mythology, and magic. I look towards my ancestors and my family for inspiration. My true passion lies in telling our stories, ones I didn’t see represented in books or media growing up. I come from a long line of artists, writers, and musicians, who in turn are descendants of pachucas, indigenous vaqueros and genízaros. I try to highlight the energy of the past with my unique drawing style and a vibrant, nostalgic color palette.
