I've always been fascinated by Sicily and by the heat that eminates from the centre of the earth, the earth's core, and the brilliant colours of volcanic landscapes. One main focus of the painting, the pine, is sometimes thought of as a lonely tree and considering the history of Sicily and characters such as Empidocles, Cagliostro and the mythical Klingsor, I felt this tree amid the fiery Sicilian landscape had a strength of character that could stand alone. It's an imaginative painting, based on the inspiration of Sicily rather than literal depiction. It's colour is the central focus, the fire, the heat and the way that solid and liquid interact and change states in a molten metamorphosis, amid the evening sunlight. The higher light was descending and the light of the earth's core was ascending.
