About The Artwork
Traditional British Pie and Mash shop, Manze', in London, the oldest chain of Pie Mash shops, with the first opening in Bermondsey in 1902. There are a few more Manze' scattered around the city. This scene is of the South London Camberwell/Peckham area, the fifth and final shop which opened in 1927. I was drawn to the unique EEL & PIE HOUSE lettering on the facade of the building and the interesting composition/ height I could create with this using a narrow 30x60cm canvas. The history, longevity, and continued popularity of the stores today is my inspiration behind painting it, in my contemporary and colourful style. I hope to create an interesting contemporary contrast to the past black & white photographic depictions of the building. The painting is on a deep edged canvas (unframed but ready to hang) with the edges painted in Emerald Green to match the tiling.
