Alena Adamíková is systematically focused on her own re-definition of the genre of portrait painting. Her theme, this possible impossibility, seemingly already fully exploited and marginal, has become the central point of interest for this painter. She searches for and keeps finding new layers in it, and as a deeply reflective artist, she processes them in cycles that are submitted to her intense, focused attention. Adamíkova seeks new possibilities to unify, and transcend, these two main approaches to the qualities of a painted portrait by using minimized stylizations – in situations, for example, when the portrayed individual is asleep, delving beneath the surface of water, lowering their eyes, or completely turned away from the spectator. She balances precipitously on the edge where the image of a human face could lose its essential mission to communicate and “connect the inner world with the external one”.

I have been doing portrait paintings for the last 20 years. I sometimes think that it is not just fascination, but it has turned into an obsession. I feel that I can react to the many different situations with the different interpretations of the face. I am convinced that I can read the trace of the life experience, but unfortunately not the story. I find the face as an interface between the inner and the outer world, but no one can get beyond that interface. My portrait paintings clearly express this feeling of the unreachable inner world of the portrayed person.
