Pattern is Meaning Painting

This work was conceived as a process experiment, involving the laying first of a base of reflective metallic paint containing highly textured grooves produced by a toothed silicon implement most commonly used for pottery or ceramics work. The textured metallic substrate then formed the base on which to lay an arbitrary arrangement of marks with a black glaze, allowing the metallic paint to show through while also allowing the texture of the base layer to be visually revealed and accentuated by the black pigment settling into the grooves. As the work developed, a composition began to reveal itself, and details and embellishments were added. Additionally, glazes were added to vignette the corners, thereby drawing attention and focus to the center. The overall effect is to produce a work with a pattern that seems to hold some meaning, as if the specific and seemingly arbitrary arrangement of the dark marks may constitute a deliberate language or system of representing information.
