About The Artwork

The is the first piece in the 'Owning Her Desire' series. These women do not present themselves for another’s gaze, while looking away, coyly draped to obscure the clarity of themselves. The images capture women in command of their own sexuality. Often looking directly at the viewer, they assert their autonomy to upend a legacy of indoctrination that insists we exist chiefly to be desirous objects, tools, or vessels for the pleasure of others. These women demand the viewer reconsider the fallacy of birth right privilege that prioritizes male pleasure over women's. They challenge mens proclivity to interpret a partners behavior through the lens of their own wishes. They upend the male expectation that male pleasure controls both partners narratives. This piece is assembled from custom, baltic birch panels. The background panel is a collage; my grandmothers handmade lace describes pillows, quarter-sawn figured fumed eucalyptus veneer creates the illusion of paneling and 50 years of playboy centerfolds in miniature create the bed sheets. The woman, resting comfortable in her own skin, is painted on a cutout panel and mounted to the background.
