About The Artwork
I had a bit of fun painting this. The rocks are, for the most part, unrealistic colours, scraped into shape with a credit card. You get interesting mixtures of colours as the paints run together. The sky also was produced using credit card, but just blue paint. If I'd used arbitrary colours in the sky, that might have complemented the colours of the rocks quite nicely, but it didn't occur to me at the time. On some future occasion, perhaps. Once upon a time, mountains were viewed as places of foreboding and peril. Now we regard them as places of great beauty, but every time I paint them, I think, "This place is inimical to humans. You wouldn't want to build a house there."

Paul Lyons is a New Zealand artist working in watercolour.
He uses a variety of techniques to achieve the unusually rich, dark colours and textures that characterise many of his watercolours, and his paintings often include layers of collaged Japanese rice paper or gouache.
He has exhibited in various galleries, including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and his paintings hang in collections throughout New Zealand and in America and Britain.
The paintings are all watercolours executed with archival-quality materials (100% rag paper and paints with a lightfastness rating of A or AA).
