This work is inspired by the great cellist, Pablo Casals, who lived an extraordinary life full of music and passion. Casals lived until 96, his life spot-lit by his fame as a musician, his active objection to oppressive regimes and his tempestuous private life. As a musician myself, I know the passion of playing and the very real relationship one develops with one's instrument and I wanted to convey this through this work. I usually work in watercolour but the strength of this painting needed something thicker, more viscous so I chose to use acrylics. On Arches cold pressed paper. Mounted on ivory mat board, framed in contemporary gold and black.

I have drawn for as long as I can remember, my childhood endeavours becoming more proficient through my determined practice over the years. Throughout my adult life I have continued to draw, an activity that gives me great pleasure and satisfaction. I am an enthusiastic student of the techniques of the Old Masters and their widely varying portrayals of the human body, common to all, unique to each, and always challenging and inspiring to depict creatively. I am self-taught and paint in watercolour and, more recently, acrylic. I use a limited palette and only 3 or 4 top-quality brushes. I utilise the storehouse of impressions I have built up from my travels as a musician. My subconscious reworks these initial ideas in vivid, remembered dreams which become the inspirations for my work. www.studiobluesea.com www.studiobluesea.wordpress.com
