About The Artwork

Every artwork I’ve created since leaving art school is united by a relentless illustration of water: in its presence, abundance, absence. As my practice has developed, so too has the imagery through which I have presented my ongoing study into water-related environmental extremes. My painted bodies of water have filled and risen: thicker marks and more permanent paints have become flooding and over-spilling. From imagination – or exaggeration – in the case of my Overpaintings; to documentary in the case of my Almería, Florence, Venice and Paris works. Observations on the effects of Venice’s rising bòla (waterline) prompted this new series. Taking a step toward minimalism allows me to focus solely on charting a heightening horizon: each painting with slightly less sky than its predecessor.

David Cass’s artistic approach is wide-ranging; each project anchored by sustainability and environmental campaign. While painting and construction are the artforms he returns to most often, his recent projects also include photography, writing, survey and curation. Bound by their use of found and recycled materials, Cass’s award winning artworks each investigate water in some way: from straight depictions of sea, to illustrations of sea-rise; from commentary on extreme climatic events such as drought and flooding, to the melting of ice in the Arctic. Cass believes wholeheartedly that art is a beacon in this time of climate crisis.
