About The Artwork

Many of Louis' paintings are inspired by music. In the MUSICAL GRAFFITI series, he uses melody and rhythm as the source for the painting. He has created a sub series within the MUSICAL GRAFFITI series entitled TOTEM. In the TOTEM series, Louis is creating shapes based chord voicings and harmonic overtones. He sees these visions as a vertical stack of shapes, not unlike looking at a chord on sheet music. The colors in TOTEM 3 are warm greens and blues on a cool grayish white background. Louis was inspired by the colors in the ocean in August and is very happy with the transparent subtleties he achieved in the main shapes. The crisp, minimal composition is starkly elegant and bold, with a lyrical, poetic feeling. This is painting is acrylics on Gatorboard, which is mounted onto a frame made of 1 x 2 pine, and finished off with off white stripping. It is wired and ready to hang.

Louis is a Philadelphia, PA based artist and musician. "There is the idea of what a painting could be, then there is what happens while making the painting." "In my current work I employ a process driven call & response approach with the aesthetic goal of balancing shifting degrees of chaos and potential through the orchestration of organic and geometric structures. I am inspired by diverse sources: patterns (natural & man-made), sound waves, cycles, waves, frequencies, urban decay, architectural artifacts, geometry, geology, astronomy, tribal & corporate symbols, icons, technology and commercial graphics. By making art, I endeavor to reveal the mystery that is common to them. I am drawn to the history of things; to the possibility of different outcomes based on combinations of planned decisions and random events. I am intrigued with how small, repetitive actions consistently applied over the course of time, create complex systems that are greater than the sum of their parts. My approach is exploratory, reactionary and cathartic. I start with a concept, and follow the cues that the painting process gives me, often using unpredictable means to apply and remove paint, recycling, re-purposing and repositioning. Some decisions are planned, some are not. The result is the consequence of my reactions to previous actions. This process leads to reinvention and discovery, erosion and re assemblage; a play of deliberation and chance." His paintings and commissions are included in many private collections.
