'Meditation and Reflection' Painting

My painting originally conceived as a diptych deals with the concept and state of ‘Refection’. It is a personal moment or focus on one’s thoughts, delving into, analyzing, and contemplating about a particular subject. For me there is a special, organic process that one is engaged in as one deals with the intimate, internal, introspective journey, that maybe conscious or unconscious as we travel in that state of reflection. We may reflect on a poem, on a personal verbal interaction we had with anyone, we can reflect on the nature and intention of a painting, on an emotional event that has touched us and brought us to states of melancholia, joy, sadness, confusion, etc. Thus, it is possible to say, that in a state of contemplative reflection, we take a pause, and become absorbed by what ideas, interactions, experiences or thoughts that transfix us and that travel through us. My painting stands alone as an individual work of art, but also co-exists comfortably as a creative extension to the painting ‘Meditation’ and can best be viewed as a diptych. My painting of ‘Meditation’ has been inspired by the countless moments I have read an intriguing article or book about some event current or historical that has captured my attention and imagination. In these moments of complete absorption in the written or printed word I have found myself so deep in thought and focus, that if felt like sort of a trance state was entered, and I was capable of blocking and becoming oblivious to extra external sounds or stimuli around me. The fascination with a story or a novel that was able to capture my interest and full concentration enabled me and transported me to a deeper level of thought and consciousness. It is this dynamic, silent, deeply private moment of attending to words, ideas, images of information from a written source that I have attempted to visualize in this painting.
