Artist's statement: "This is a series of paintings I have been working on whose subject is the materials of making art themselves. The title refers to the gifts of color, luster, materiality that combine to create beauty - or at least visual interest, since not all art is intended to be beautiful. These are quite three-dimensional in person and really leap off the wall in a striking way, I think." “Lyman’s work evolves restlessly, with the common elements generally being deft and unusual color choices that balance assonance and dissonance, and vestiges of the hand and facture purposely left in the paintings.
