Life in Maastricht Painting

Ah yes, all the years I lived in Dutch Maastricht. A vibrant, colorful city of beer, wine and coffee cafes, the V & D, Hema, Blokkers, De Cuyp Restaurant carnival festivals, parades, Canne and pancakes, worldwide express companies, my Edisonstraat art studio, the Wermweg and much, much more. My personal lifeline of telephone cards to the world within and without, in Europe and back in America. My fascination with these communication cards, their information, their designs, their logos, inspired my need to save them to assemble them in a collage format and medium. But not just to preserve them but rather to resurrect their visual appeal and elegance combined with my paints to solidify their ‘telecom’ heritage and significance. As the cliché goes, all good things come and fade away. Now with our cell phones, these rich, picturesque, sources of visual information that we once pocketed and inserted into a phone to retrieve a musical dial tone, have now become extinct, to most newcomers, but not to persons like myself who aesthetically wish to immortalize their historical impact on the life I lived back in time.
