Nichiren Daishonin, the Buddha whom I follow, lived in 13th century Japan. He was banished to Sado Island for his radical social ideas and remonstrations against the government. In exile, faced with a harsh environment and deprivation, he wrote letters to his disciples encouraging their practice. The ominous quality of this painting is to conjure the atmosphere of winter on Sado Island. The surface of the painting is textured and the colors reflect the somber mood. The painting is on a wooden stretcher ready to be hung.

United States
My art education began as a child accompanying my father on weekly sketching trips around beautiful 'colonial' Savannah and neighboring fishing villages. Seeking new vehicles for personal expression, I learned to weave, and moved to England and set up a studio. During my stay abroad, I exhibited my work and executed commissions for tapestries and rugs. I was flooded by images which took a long time to execute by weaving, and began to paint with water colors. Upon returning to the United States I decided to pursue an education in painting. Abstract Expressionism was a major influence on the work I produced during this time. The sense of infinite space, luminous sensuous color, and allusions to landscape allowed for the expression of my Buddhist beliefs. “Color is a thread that runs through all of my work.” This applies also to the series of Abstract Landscapes and even portraits that I have painted over time.
