About The Artwork

Les Sauvages” (210 cm x 100 cm) Acrylique sur toile 2023 Jean-Luc Feugeas In my piece ”Les Sauvages” (210 cm x 100 cm), I endeavor to explore profound and universal themes that resonate with significant works in the history of art, such as Th´eodore G´ericault’s ”The Raft of the Medusa.” This parallel lies in the fact that, like G´ericault, I have ventured to delve into the human condition in extreme situations. This renowned work depicts the distress of the shipwrecked on the Medusa, serving as a potent meditation on human vulnerability and resilience in desperate circumstances. In ”The Savages,” I sought to evoke, to the best of my ability, similar emotions and experiences. Within ”Les Sauvages” an opposition between two worlds is presented: on one hand, the dire situation of the shipwrecked, and on the other, that of the rest of the world, seemingly oblivious to their suffering. This duality metaphorically conveys how individuals can be isolated and forsaken despite their proximity to society, prompting profound questions within me about empathy, solidarity, and humanity’s capacity to turn away from suffering that is not immediately visible. I aimed to imbue ”Les Sauvages” with a narrative dimension, akin to what Diego Rivera accomplished in his monumental frescoes. The proportions of the canvas attest to this aspiration. Rivera’s frescoes often carried important social messages. My intention was to employ the canvas as a medium to explore a complex and profound narrative. In ”Les Sauvages” I share a personal contemplation on universal themes such as the human condition, the relationship between the individual and society, and how we respond to the suffering of our fellow beings. Humility is, of course, essential when discussing the work of masters like Th´eodore G´ericault or Diego Rivera, but references to these giants serve as guiding lights on my artistic journey.

“As the saying goes, you have to learn the rules in order to break them. For Jean-Luc Feugeas, a French painter with a PhD in mathematics who now works as a university researcher in theoretical physics, the rules of perspective and the principles of geometry ebb and flow on the canvas, bending to the artist’s intuition. The results are fragmentary, colorful compositions wherein figures coalesce with their surroundings. Slouching and sprawled across furniture, or pensively caving inward onto themselves, the figures in Jean-Luc’s works come alive in their movements, seemingly conscious of the illogical spaces that contain them. Addressing themes such as relationships, longing, and migration, these formally fragmented spaces become metaphors for the social and political spaces that we, the viewers, navigate everyday. Jean-Luc’s work has been collected internationally, with works held in private collections throughout North America, Europe, and East Asia. He has exhibited around the world, with his most recent exhibition at Frogman Gallery in Beijing. He has also been commissioned for numerous public mural projects, including the 2019 mural Un Sauvage on the occasion of Muralis, the Festival of Urban Art in Dax, France.” Saatchi Art – One to watch Bethany Finchercurator at Saatchi Art
