This is a painting that took many months to develop from inception to its title. But to be honest this pictorial goes back to around 2004 when I painted a Renoir-inspired “Swan” portrait, but without any psychological or mythological undertones; it was a simple portrait. Fast forward to 2023 and while painting in my usual “no themes” style I started painting the neck and head of another swan! But as I went along it turned out not to be the full animal but its severed head! Oh my! I left the painting as such and added floral elements to the painting like trees and also my favorite abstract, geometric shapes. Then I was finished painting the picture. But no title! What was I to title this one? Many months from early January 2023 went by until today, really, June 16th, 2023 and after a nap the title sprung into my head! “Leda Ate the Swan”! Turning the entire Greek myth on its head making Leda the heroine of the picture—tho not represented in figurative form—so she thus killed her would-be rapist, Zeus, and left the severed head in a pool of Prussian blue, no blood, tho red is all around the head. Now for the first time to my knowledge the classical representation of the Greek myth has been turned into feminine mythos! Enjoy!
