Leaves in Wind was inspired by an Indian summer courtyard at my company, Abt Associates headquarters, in Cambridge, MA. Diverse textures and early autumn leaf tones were enjoyably achieved by the vigorous application of the brushless pour and tilt innovation during a one-hour lunch hour in that main treelined courtyard, in full view of toddlers from the adjacent Children’s Village daycare center, and some of their parents eating their lunches at the benches and tables along the warm edges. The cheerful success of the company and staff’s summer “intensive marketing crunch” campaign, coincided with a rush of government anti-poverty and air defense contracts at the end of the government’s fiscal year, contracts in which the company had specialized under the painting CEOs leadership. Large scale, countrywide social experiments in healthcare, housing, and education were a result of these efforts. So, the little less than one hour lunch hour was a kind of celebration of the success for staff of all levels, of the large wins of competitive bids during intensive efforts of the summer marketing crunch. Leaves in Wind, the happy result of the experimental brushless colorful abstract expressionist pour and tilt painting technique, was in a sense the result of an experiment; analogous to my, and the company’s, evidence based scientific research methods.
