This work emerges as an inner journey, a profound and introspective quest. In this painting, I immerse myself in the soul of an individual in deep introspection, where their existence is examined, identity scrutinized, and life's path questioned. At the core of this composition, the protagonist, kneeling, is shrouded in a red cloak and adorned with an adventurer's hat. Their gaze lingers intensely upon a white mask held in their hand. This mask, a mirror of his being, re ects his own duality, their other self. In profound meditation, they pause in their journey, delving into the shadows to unveil the light, to reveal the essence of their own nature. They kneel before a sepulcher. The sepulcher of the mask. This other self they decide to bury. The contrast between the immaculate mask, the white glove covering one of their hands, and the rest of the canvas reinforces the underlying theme, celebrating the duality between our social facade and our profound essence. Just as the character on stage, we all confront the question of the opportune moment to remove our mask and unveil the authenticity of our inner being. The lunar landscape in the background adds a symbolic dimension to the whole, evoking the universal quest for truth and self-awareness. The dark sky, im- bued with mystery, underscores the crucial importance of this inner exploration, transforming the canvas itself into a mirror for deep reection. "The Duel" encourages meditation and the search for authenticity, urging us to engage in this battle for truth with loyalty. This painting is an invitation to contemplate existence, to discover our inner truth, and to engage in this duel, with nobility.

“As the saying goes, you have to learn the rules in order to break them. For Jean-Luc Feugeas, a French painter with a PhD in mathematics who now works as a university researcher in theoretical physics, the rules of perspective and the principles of geometry ebb and flow on the canvas, bending to the artist’s intuition. The results are fragmentary, colorful compositions wherein figures coalesce with their surroundings. Slouching and sprawled across furniture, or pensively caving inward onto themselves, the figures in Jean-Luc’s works come alive in their movements, seemingly conscious of the illogical spaces that contain them. Addressing themes such as relationships, longing, and migration, these formally fragmented spaces become metaphors for the social and political spaces that we, the viewers, navigate everyday. Jean-Luc’s work has been collected internationally, with works held in private collections throughout North America, Europe, and East Asia. He has exhibited around the world, with his most recent exhibition at Frogman Gallery in Beijing. He has also been commissioned for numerous public mural projects, including the 2019 mural Un Sauvage on the occasion of Muralis, the Festival of Urban Art in Dax, France.” Saatchi Art – One to watch Bethany Finchercurator at Saatchi Art
