Homage to the grandiose traditions of classical academic painting and a play on prevailing views of that era (maybe this one, also?) concerning the role of women and so-called "primitive" people. This type of production was what constituted "art" to the exclusion of all else not so many years ago. We suppose ourselves more enlightened but every time I see critics gush about an imminently forgettable show which "redefines the boundaries of" or "expands the definition of..." art I get the queasy feeling we're standing in awe next to the modern equivalent of "Raft of the Medusa". Incidentally, the female figure is from Masimo Stanzione's "Susanna and the Elders". The "savages" are from various comics, photos or movies.
