During the summer of 2023, I visited Kew Gardens with my friend Cimone. The Glass House was hot and steamy that morning, in such a way that the windows that surrounded us masked all of the scenery beyond-- misted to abstract the view into tantalizing blocks of pure color. I was climbing the gorgeous iron spiral staircase when this view emerged (sans cat, of course) and fixed itself so truly in my brain that it has called out for painting ever since. The curves of the building itself, the arch of the stair rail, the straight lines of the ornate pathways, and then the leaves in all of their magnificent organic shapes curving hither and thither to interrupt architecture's lines and imitations... what a moment of pure magic. When I was painting it, I realized that the elevated pathway and the railing beyond had fixed themselves in my brain in such a way that relative size was making perspective tricky, so I called in the help of a delightful wee ginger cat. I am not sure he helped my perspective problem at all but he certainly seems to be having fun up there and I loved the way his orange coat spoke to the myriad greens of the plants surrounding him and the viewer. Ferns and palms and banana leaves frame the painting in washes of green: emerald and Kelly and forest and hunter and mint and pistachio and splashes of lime and soft Messel green to bring feelings of perpetual spring to the fore. How lucky I feel to have this memory to share. The piece is painted on a 16x20 cradled birch board which may be framed or hung as is. It has a relatively narrow profile at 7/8 of an inch. It will ship, wrapped in layers of glassine and padding and placed in a box, from my studio in the California East Bay.

Lara Meintjes, also known as Agnes, is a South African artist, happily living in Oakland, California. She is particularly interested in arrangements of color, and the effects of each color's presence on the others within a composition. She also really likes flowers and awkward ceramic objects. Lara is fascinated by the dividing line between fact and fantasy, and the lingering imprint of childhood on our adult lives. She likes to play in the negative space between objects.
