A moment of frozen stillness when anything could happen next — a distant fox, a procession of frogs crossing the road to their pond to lay eggs —it's January and the whole year has yet to happen. The details can wait. Live in hope. Originally intended as the first in a series. The next, "February, Nesting" is part-finished. I shall return to it soon. I'm fascinated by the changing seasons but, working rather slowly, I can never keep up and so have many paintings on the go at the same time.

Born Cairo, Egypt 19.9.1949. I have painted for my living for over 50 years, through thick and thin. Nowadays I have my studio in West Dorset, previously North Yorkshire. In normal times, I aim to travel for half the year, painting as I go, usually in goache, very portable. All my painting is on a black background, and the image emerges out of the Void, a fairly thrilling process. The subject matter: I only paint what I find beautiful, fascinating, and what makes me happy. These qualities mean the paintings will outlast the whims of fashion.
