About The Artwork

Intellectual Rigor is inspired by my experience that what we absorb in the public media is often not the entire truth and or role as global citizens is more challenging than ever before. It is our responsibility to search for the underlying truth. This painting builds up layers of paint, each obscuring portions of the underlying layers, The viewer is encouraged to imagine and explore what truth might lie below. This is an engaging painting, created using oils, graphite and painting mediums on a cradled wood panel with a variety of mark-making tools. The result is thoughtful yet adventurous. I could look at this piece all day long.

After earning a graduate business degree with High Honors from Boston University and an undergraduate degree from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, I have led a successful career as a branding and marketing strategist for well-known consumer product and financial services companies as well as technology and entrepreneurial adventures. Whether launching new brands or leading digital marketing, I was always the client interacting with highly creative people – writers, artists, designers – to create new advertising, packaging and promotional materials. Eventually, my interest in the creative side emerged and I began to paint. Through a series of group and private workshops and always reaching out to artists I admired I began to study the art and techniques of painting, evolving over time from a purely representational painter to become an abstract artist. Abstraction reflects the act of painting as much as the end result – the journey to the completed piece is part of the experience.
