About The Artwork
These paintings are chasing the feeling of weightlessness you achieve underwater. I love how you can remove the water yet still know it is water just by the way the body moves. I have developed a looser style recently, making the water much more gestural, which contrasts and pushes the more realistic body forward. I take all the underwater photos for my paintings, working with my models to create the shots I’m looking for. I love being able to shape the process right from the beginning.

Originally from New Zealand, I have been in the U.K. for 20 years now, after 18 years in London I relocated out to the lush Kent countryside where I paint in a studio at the bottom of the garden with my dog and 6 Music. In my paintings I love the idea of recreating the physical memory of water, sunshine and light. I aim to capture in a single moment the exhilaration, the joy, the solitude or the tranquility of being in the water. I explore all manner of subjects in my work but I find the underlying connection of water seems to reoccur continuously.
