I SEE COLOR Painting

I SEE COLOR is from my Marking TIme series. In this series, each brush stroke influences, but no single mark determines the next. Sometimes a brushstroke will not look as planned and a new path opens up. The Marking Time paintings are a visual representation of a life well lived. A life lived day in and day out while celebrating the uniqueness, struggles, and beauty of each individual day. Marking Time paintings tell stories of hope that- influenced by yet not controlled by the prior choice - each life contains the possibility that the final result might be beautiful. I SEE COLOR is inspired by a white family member telling me, "I don't see color. I treat everyone the same. I am color blind." I thought to myself, "Colorblindness is a disability." Then I made this painting to demonstrate the cost of being colorblind and treating everyone the "same." If you squint a little, the colors blur and you can not see the individual shapes. Colorblindness is a liability. If you can not see the shapes in the painting, maybe you are missing something important about not seeing individuals as individuals. When I have hung large canvases like this, I have stapled them to the wall. Clients hanging large works have done the same. It is also possible to have the canvas stretched and hung as a traditional painting once it arrives at its forever home.
