About The Artwork
This kaleidoscope was not created by digital means, but painstakingly by hand. The painting started with a solid red under coat, and I built up the image with many thin layers of glaze. The red under layer creates a complexity of color where it sometimes shows through. This is the final in a series of paintings based on hydrangeas. The little pops of yellow and sienna aren't botanically accurate but add an appealing offset to the overall cobalt teal.A painting like this usually takes two to three months to complete. I hope the viewer will feel a sense of calmness and happiness by contemplating this nature mandala.

I was born and brought up in Boston, Massachusetts. I can't remember a time when I didn't have a pencil in my hand and a pad of paper to draw on. I've never imagined being anything but an artist, although there was a time after graduating college that i had to wait for my ideas to come of age. Although I'm a native of the East Coast, after working in Santa Barbara since 1976 and the California light, colors, and aesthetic has been the strongest influence on my work. I categorize my paintings as Contemporary California Realism.
