How Comfort Comes Painting

“How Comfort Comes” began with five stark, white sheets of paper and two loaded questions: What is my mission? What is my comfort? As I considered the answers to these identity-forming inquiries, I realized that oftentimes I cannot pursue both—my mission and comfort—simultaneously, at least not in the ways I expect. Words sprawled across the surface of this piece, but quickly dissolved into an array of abstract imagery, as if washed over and transformed into a feeling beyond words. Comfort, for me, can be found in the safety of predictions, or it can become a deeper entity that sweeps over trivial things. This work challenged me to exchange a superficial definition of comfort for one that comes from values beyond myself. Comfort coming from belief, from trust, from wonder—this is the force that works with one’s mission, propelling it rather than keeping it safe.
