About The Artwork

Holding on to the Intangible is a landscape painting commenting about our connectivity to each other in the modern world. Individualism rules in our society even though we can connect to more people than ever before, surrounded by billions of people and yet more alone, our identity is a drop in a sea of digital souls. The main figure holds onto a rainbow, rainbows are real, you can see them, but they are intangible a metaphor of what people believe they know. What can be sure is the constant growing, shrinking and changing form of our society, constantly in a flux of technology, political instability, questions of race, gender equity, sexuality, inequality, climate change, people are unsure of what is real, what can be trusted and what is an illusion. The painting includes numerous horizons with many roads to travel leading to a plethora of outcomes. What road can be trusted? Which path will lead to the desired outcomes? Our figure is left floating in the centre of the canvas crippled with indecision. His rainbow of hope is his guide, a mantra “be kind to others,” “compassion,” “peace”. In this world so busy, full of confusion, contradiction and competition we must hope that individuals find each other again and reunite to build communities that work towards a better future for all.
