Inspired by the Japanese Garden tradition, this painting echoes the tradition of the 'Hira-Niwa' garden.  Unlike gardens with waterfalls, or elevations, flat planes are given depth and dimension through the use of clever planting.  This recreates the notion of landscapes of valleys or moors.

Three techniques have been used to achieve this painting.  The underlayers are painted in smooth brushwork, in gradient colour to provide depth.  To the sides of the painting, bold colour and palette knife work are used.  The vivacity of the coral red references Japanese blossom and maples.  The final technique is the shrouding in fine layers of white in some areas, and ochre in others.  The painting is intended to pair the quietude of Japanese gardens with their effervescence.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My art is primarily organic abstraction, often portraying surreal and softened landscapes. A dream or nebulous quality marks both transitions and compositions. This is derived from a mode of life, which is rooted in inner stillness. I live in South West France, surrounded by tranquil forests. That quietness of being is what I strive for in my studio. I paint without distraction, so that I can fully connect with what I am creating. The more I can remove myself from the process, the better the work. I only paint in oils as they give such wonderful luminosity and I prefer large scale pieces for freedom of mind.
