As we move into summer 2020, there is change in the air like I’ve never seen before. My heart has been heavy this week with the losses and the violence. But I’m seeing and hearing change. People marching together, people speaking up and out, and I am hearing and seeing more white allies standing up to support our black and brown family, friends, and community members. I’m in conversations with white allies who are learning, and educating. It is heartening. “Healing Love” has many layers underneath. Paintings that didn’t work, attempts to rectify that failed. And then one night late this week, I came the studio and listened to the canvas. Listened to what she’s been trying to tell me for two years. I painted in some softer colors in the negative spaces. I covered the lines with a bright, warm coral red. At 2 am, I knew I didn’t know what else to do and I went to bed. I woke up the next morning hoping for clarity, a vision that in the past would come in those moments between the awake and the dreaming world, but there was none. I was at a loss. I came back to the studio and sat in front of the canvas. Bright colors, I thought, I’ll paint more bright colors. And then I heard the canvas whispering to me—softer, gentler, healing she whispered. But how, I asked. I still didn’t know what to do. And then the answer came—the answer was love. Not romantic love, but the powerful transformative force of love, revolutionary love. My mind immediately went to Yayoi Kusama’s work, her pattern play and monochromatic repetitions…and I knew where I was going next. I brought in green patterned marks with loaded paintbrushes inspired by Kusama’s artwork. I brought in fine line work—a rarity in my work—clusters of circles scattered throughout the painting. To me, the green dots flow together—they are the truth of how interconnected we are as humans—and the circles are smaller collections of people: friends, families, communities—trying to find each other and come together. This painting is optimistic, as I am, about what is coming. There is much work to do and we cannot wait any longer. “Healing Love,” is an 24”x30” acrylic painting on gallery-wrapped canvas, with painted edges. This work of Joy is wired and ready to bring you Joy to your home or office.

Would you love some Joy? Well, you've come to the right place. My paintings have been anecdotally proven to bring Joy. Whether you choose paintings abundant with bright, vibrant colors or imbued with a calming, soft gathering of neutrals, your adding my art to your life will bring you Joy. Joy is essential to feeling balanced and restoring, especially in difficult times. I've spent the past four years learning more about the positive impact of joy and playing with how to bring that to my art. Joy brings hope and optimism, for me and for my collectors. I delve deeply into why Joy matters; how it is different from happiness; why we not only need it, but we all **deserve** it. My paintings bring positive energy wherever they are displayed. My paintings have exhibited in solo and group shows in Seattle, Virginia, Maryland, Nashville, North Carolina, and Washington DC, including at the Phillips Collection. My works are held in private collections in Seattle, New York, London, Washington DC, Virginia, California, and around the world. Born in London, England, my parents and I emigrated to the States when I was two. I hold an MFA in Visual Arts at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, an MA from The George Washington University, and a BA from Davidson College. I am married to a retired U.S. Marine, Tom, and we live in Seattle with our beloved Golden Chow, Mory, aka Studio Dog.
